ONE PIECE: Grand Gourmet beginner's guide: how the game works
By stormland · Published
TL;DR
- You run the Baratie Number Two, a floating restaurant that starts as a small ship, with Sanji and the Straw Hats.
- New dishes come from developing recipes with Sanji, using characters’ ideas as hints. Some use Devil Fruit powers.
- You find new ingredients on adventures, which include island exploration and automatic turn-based battles.
- Dishes can be decorated and grouped into signature meal sets; better sets mean better sales.
- Over 200 decor items and 400+ characters: if a character likes your design, they may become a regular.
Pre-launch version. This guide covers what Bandai Namco and Kairosoft have officially shown. We'll add hands-on tips, a step-by-step opening and real numbers after the game launches on October 23, 2026.
ONE PIECE: Grand Gourmet is the One Piece gourmet game from Kairosoft: a restaurant management sim where you cook with Sanji, design a dining room and serve hundreds of characters from the series. If you've never played a Kairosoft game, here's how everything fits together.
The story
The official Japanese site describes this as a ONE PIECE world "a little different from usual." A nasty fake Baratie has appeared at sea. Patty and Carne, cooks from the real Baratie, set out to deal with it, but an unexpected accident forces them to give up.
That's when Luffy and Sanji run into them, along with you: a stowaway who snuck aboard Patty's ship. Taking on the pair's mission, you all open the Baratie Number Two to beat the fake. You start as a new staff member, and your restaurant starts as a small ship that you grow into the greatest floating restaurant on the seas.
Bandai Namco's official "day in the life of a rookie staff member" video shows the daily loop: developing new menus with Sanji, arranging the interior and serving customers to win the shop more fans.
Developing dishes with Sanji
Cooking is the heart of the game. You develop new dishes together with Sanji, and other characters chip in with ideas. Those ideas work as hints for which ingredients to choose, so pay attention to what your guests and staff suggest.
Official material names a wide range of dishes:
- Series classics like Water-Water Meat BBQ, made from Water 7's famous meat, and Sea King Penne Gorgonzola, the pasta Luffy eats on Amazon Lily.
- Special creations that use Devil Fruit powers. The Japanese site shows a sizzling steak grilled with the Flame-Flame Fruit and tingling dan dan noodles made with the Rumble-Rumble Fruit.
- Plenty of character-themed dishes on the Japanese site, such as Sanji's pilaf.
Exactly which ingredients make which dish hasn't been revealed. Once ingredient data is in, the Recipe Finder will show which dishes you can cook from what you already have, and which are one ingredient away.
Decorating dishes and building meal sets
A finished dish isn't just served as is. The Japanese site says you can freely place cutlery such as chopsticks and forks, plus items packed with ONE PIECE details, to create an original presentation.
You then arrange dishes into meal sets, which the English store pages call signature set menus. The Japanese store page sums up the goal: build set menus so good that ONE PIECE characters groan in delight, and grow your sales.
Adventures and ingredients
You can't develop new dishes without new ingredients, and those come from going out on adventures. Official screenshots show an outing that brings back a hunk of meat. The game's ESRB rating summary adds more:
Players explore islands, expand their restaurant, and battle enemies in turn-based combat. Battles are automatic.
The Japanese site's advice is simple: head out often to expand your repertoire. We'll list where to find every ingredient on the ingredients page.
Decorating the restaurant
There are over 200 furniture, building and decorative items, and you can place them freely. Many are styled after islands from the series:
- Whole Cake Island: dessert-themed pieces
- Egghead: futuristic items
- Alabasta and Sky Island sets
- Single pieces in Wano, Fish-Man Island and Sabaody Archipelago styles
Decor matters for business, not just looks. Bandai Namco says different setups attract different characters:
If a character likes your design, they may even become a regular!
See the furniture list as it fills in.
Characters, staff and regulars
Over 400 ONE PIECE characters appear, as staff and as customers, drawn in pixel style for the first time in a game. Bandai Namco's English announcement puts it this way:
Players join the Straw Hat Crew and chef Sanji, and turn no customer away, making sure fan favorite characters, friend or foe, are lining up for the grand opening.
Official images show Ace stopping by and remarking that the sea restaurant smells good, and Higuma breaking into a cold sweat at the sight of Shanks. Bandai Namco has also teased the giants of Elbaph. Expect character events and character-to-character interactions you can't see anywhere else.
Keeping characters happy is how you grow: serve them well, win them over as fans, and they may become regulars. We'll document each character's favourite dishes and decor on their page; start with Sanji.
What to expect if you know Kairosoft games
Kairosoft's earlier restaurant sim, Cafeteria Nipponica, has you develop dishes by combining a base dish with one or two ingredients and a chef, then upgrade dishes, hire and train staff, and expand to more restaurants. Grand Gourmet shares the dish-development idea, but its exact systems haven't been detailed, so treat that as a reference point rather than a promise.
Launch-day checklist
- Pick your platform carefully. On Nintendo, the Switch and Switch 2 versions are separate $19.99 purchases with no upgrade path and no save transfer, so if you own a Switch 2, buy that version. Details in platforms.
- Know when it unlocks. Steam opens first, on October 22 at 6 PM ET / 3 PM PT. The eShop and Google Play follow on October 23, and the US App Store on October 24.
- Turn on cloud saves. Steam Cloud is built in; on Switch, Save Data Cloud needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Each version has a single save slot.
- Listen to your guests. Characters' ideas are your hints for new dishes, so note what they suggest.
- Go on adventures early and often. New ingredients only come from adventures, and every new ingredient opens up more recipes.
- Keep the Recipe Finder open. As we add verified recipes, it tells you what your current ingredients can make.
