If the new One Piece cooking game has you curious about its developer, you're in for a treat. Kairosoft has been making cosy pixel-art management sims for decades, and several of them are restaurant games. Here's who Kairosoft is and which of its games to play before or after ONE PIECE: Grand Gourmet.

Who is Kairosoft?

Kairosoft Co., Ltd. is a small Japanese studio based in Shinjuku, Tokyo. It started in 1996 making PC games and became a company in 2007. Its company profile lists around 30 staff, and its game list runs to more than 80 current titles.

Its breakthrough was Game Dev Story, first released on PC in Japan in 1997. When it came to iPhone and Android in 2010, it reached the iPhone top ten in its first week. Its formula still runs through Kairosoft's games: small pixel characters, a business you grow step by step, and lots of numbers to optimize.

ONE PIECE: Grand Gourmet is Kairosoft's take on the ONE PIECE world, published by Bandai Namco. You help run a second Baratie restaurant alongside Sanji and the Straw Hats. It is not the studio's first licensed game: Doraemon got the Kairosoft treatment in 2024.

How Cafeteria Nipponica's recipes work

Because Cafeteria Nipponica is the closest relative, it's worth knowing how cooking works there. According to its manual:

  • You develop a new dish by picking a base dish, one ingredient, an optional second ingredient, and a chef.
  • Certain combinations create new dishes, which then appear in all your restaurants.
  • Dishes have stats such as taste and appeal, plus attributes (like aroma) that different customers prefer.
  • You get ingredients by buying them from a supplier whose stock changes each season, or by sending staff on searches.

Grand Gourmet also has you develop dishes, with Sanji, and find ingredients on adventures. But Bandai Namco and Kairosoft haven't confirmed that it uses the same base dish + ingredient formula. Our Recipe Finder supports base dishes just in case, and we'll update this section once we've played it.

Which one should you play?

  • Want the closest thing to Grand Gourmet? Cafeteria Nipponica.
  • Love inventing recipes? Burger Bistro Story or The Ramen Sensei.
  • Into building the perfect set menu? Cafe Master Story.
  • Here for the anime licence? Doraemon Dorayaki Shop Story.

Or just start with Grand Gourmet itself. Check the release date and price, then read the beginner's guide.
